Every video you upload to YouTube gets a set of preview images generated automatically. They're what people see in search results, on the home feed, in suggested videos, in playlists and on channel pages. Max Resolution isn't there for every video. YouTube only makes it when the original upload was good enough. If you don't see that card, HQ (480×360) is the one most likely to exist.
1. One thing to look at. A face, a product or a single clear scene reads at thumbnail size. A crowded frame doesn't.
2. Decide what's seen first. Size, brightness and position tell the eye where to go, so use them on purpose.
3. Fewer words, bigger. Two or three words survive on a phone screen. A sentence doesn't.
4. Contrast, but not everywhere. Make the subject and text stand apart from the background instead of cranking saturation on everything.
5. Check it small. Shrink your draft to phone size before you publish. If you can't read it, viewers won't either.
6. Keep the promise. Curiosity gets the click, but a thumbnail that misleads costs you watch time and trust.
7. Cut the decoration. If an element doesn't help the main message, it's getting in its way.
8. Study the pattern, not the pixels. Download competitor thumbnails at full size, look at their layout and colors, then make something of your own.
Every YouTube thumbnail lives at an address built from the video ID. Swap VIDEO_ID for the ID of your video (the part after v= in a watch link):
